I agree with your premise in general but in this case the Australian gold index is so dominated by Newcrest Mining it is not worth using as an indicator for the rest of the field. See comparison plots below.

It would be good to see a more comprehensive summary of how Australian gold exploreres, developers and producers are doing.

Note, even NCM has gone up 16% in recent weeks despite some poor production figures last week.
