A West Australian resources analyst says the strong gold price is helping to fuel a surge in the state's junior gold mining sector.

New miner Catalpa Resources is advancing plans to re-open a gold mine in the Wheatbelt town of Westonia which has been closed since the 1980s.

Resources analyst Alex Passmore from Patersons says the trend is showing up across the board.

"The short term future is fairly bright, the $1,200 per ounce gold price is a strong price and there are many operations that are profitable at that price and you are seeing several other companies open older operations," he said.
