The USD Index is made up of the currencies of the USA's major trading partners.
No one cares how much gold Australia, Russia or China dig up, it's entirely irrelevant. They dig it up, then sell it, like any other mineral.
No one buys or sells things with gold bars these days, maybe they did a few hundred years ago.
