Going off it was part of the solution. This was a much broader stimulus and recovery plan that involved huge public expenditure.
Going off the gold standard enabled the debt to be incurred and repaid more cheaply along with confiscation. Floating the dollar was later trick that Nixon used to evade the fiscal consequences of colossal debt from the Korean and Vietnam wars, not to mention involvement in South American nations.
The cause was much more complex than what you speak of.
