the basket of stocks in the s and p 500 has changed significantly over the years



take the stocks in 1970,,, just compare those to 2022– reinvest the divs as shares - follow what happened to any company in purchased in 1970 that are changed - including all the wipe outs - extra capital required in restructures etc

that is the comparison to get accurate data if you want to compare - that those graphs are flawed as the basket changes significantly
