    It's a matter of scale.
    The price of gold has varied more than 2% on the USD chart.
    It has varied less than 1% in AUD therefore moves appear amplified.
    This is why I believe gold trades as a currency hedge.
    Possibly a lot of AUD/Gold pair trading going on.
