Politicians also can't be caught flat footed, what if in 6 months they have to explain to their citizens the country can't import goods anymore from China, that idea may seem far fetched but it could be used as a way to sanction the west without really doing it, like taking a page out of the US play book, just say you don't have the collateral to trade or pony it up if you have it.
