Well, with my hand firmly on my heart, I can tell you I was in Perth International Airport about 10 years ago and there was a guy standing very boldly in the passenger waiting area (ie - after security & Customs etc) and he was wearing multiple gold chains and he reminded me of what Mr T looked like (as below but without the big cross & medallion).


I think you would be surprised how many of us "idiots" have been known to carry large amounts of gold/cash around.
