You can't eat gold AJ but you could certainly trade it for food. If you have a lot of food and i have a lot of Gold we could trade. Especially if you wanted a gun from a man with lots of guns and food but no gold. You can't trade your food with him for a gun because he has food. But he might accept gold which he can then trade for something he doesn't have. All very simple really. In a nuclear winter i very much doubt anyone will be trading paper currency for valuables such as food, weapons or gold. People may burn it to stay warm. Gold and silver will likely be accepted by everyone because it is the universal trade.
