Dec 1971 DOW was 890 ~ and Gold was $40 ~ Prior to 1971 Gold price was fixed.

So DOW is roughly 20 times up from that point with a peak of 18312. Gold is up 30 times with a peak of 45 times.

Dividends would improve the DOW result, total loss companies would hamper it. A piece of gold will always be a piece of gold. There were companies on the DOW over that time that no longer exist.
