Your argument is that shares are a better investment than gold, and use the DOW since 1885 to support your argument. But if none of the companies exist anymore it makes your argument irrelevant.

In fact it proves that gold is a great safe haven, because recessions and depressions come and go, the powerful companies of the DOW die to be replaced by a new generation, yet gold shines on. And since the 1970s when the fix was removed it appears to have out shone all alternatives on your graph.
