Gold is Gold as you say, but why shouldn’t the performance of Gold be compared to (say) the S&P 500 ETF?

Gold Is gold and has been of value since day dot as opposed to comparing it to an ETF which has only been around for 28 years (at the most) where every different index based ETF (the S&P500 in this case) has differing degrees of performance.

It’s like comparing apples with oranges.
