Whether physical or electronic, there isn’t much difference besides bulk carry. If the bank account is Zero and credit maxed out, doesn’t matter on the payment type, no goods will change hands.
If you carry gold as a form of currency, you will need to convert to paper or electronic cash to transact. Not many outlets for these conversion unless you are into large spreads at limited gold booths that will buy your gold.
