Original deposit gives some buffer room, loan loss vs valuation is a tax write off. They still retain the property which has asset value and then they can sell properties later when market improves either in tranches or sell the property and get another round of suckers to take out loans.

The government wouldn’t let banks foreclose in significant numbers as they need a strong real estate market.

I understand this comment could be met with ridicule and you’ll get no argument from me because I see some truth in conspiracy theories espoused here. Just not this one.
