No intelligent person would compare gold with the USD, gold needs to be compared to other investments like stocks or property.

People don't 'invest' in USD, they buy things with them.

And compared to them it's a lousy bet. In fact it's so bad that anyone planning their retirement 'stacking' gold bars is committing themselves to life of relative poverty, unless they get very lucky and manage to unload it at the very top of a spike like 2011.
