I can't talk for others, but in my case, I have acquired some metal solely as a store of wealth. It has the additional benefits of being anonymous, it doesn't sit on a bank's ledger, it is transportable, it has no counter party risk, it is tradeable anywhere I might want to go, there is no CGT and blah, blah, blah....===========================
How is it 'anonymous'? Someone knows you've bought it esp. from a dealer who'll have you on his books.
Gold is transportable? Customs at any destination airport might have something to say about that depending on the allowance. They'll find it too, with x-rays.
Gold is tradeable anywhere? What a laugh that is, I can just imagine going to my local restaurant or booking airline tickets with gold bars.
No CGT? That's certainly debatable.
