Well it appears people do need Gold, otherwise it wouldn't be worth $1500 an ounce! As for housing, it's gone from shelter to a speculative bubble because central banks have created the environment where borrowing and speculating is encouraged. It's of course not sustainable, and that's why property speculators are in a world of pain right now.
