Because there's 'paper' everything. Paper property, paper airlines, paper gold and even paper weather. You think if some dude who lives in central Sydney wants to speculate on the price of beef he goes and buys a few dozen cows at the nearest sale yards? No, he buys paper cows.
You think someone who owns shares in a gold miner owns a mine? No, they own a paper gold miner, if you want a real gold mine you buy or lease one and go fossicking or digging.
