Both Ford and Holden lost their battle for the Australian market when they kept looking in the rear view mirror as to what the market wanted. They kept building large gas guzzling sedans because that's what was selling. But that is what was selling because there was little else around at the time.
The Japs looked into the future and started designing and building cars that the market actually wanted and needed - hence we got a plethora of robust cabbed commercial vehicles and SUVs as well as economical 4 cylinder hatchbacks.
The same fate awaits the USA where the large locally made SUV and commercials such as the F250, RAMs and GM Truck range are slowly being replaced by more economical Jap, Korean and Chinese products .
