su27dvr, good explanation
you can even go a tad further by adding that if going long you pay a small amount of interest for borrowing
but if you short a stock you are actually PAID the interest
also you receive dividends if your holding a stock that pays one and you receive it in your trading account on the Exdate not the Paydate
but if your holding a short position and the company pays a dividend YOU PAY THE DIVIDEND, so be watchful :(
