Have you read or even watched the television series about the time of the Viking invaders? Or maybe the history of the Irish or Scottish? Or even any history at all? Because you will find these tragic events taking place throughout history and not always having the first nation people as the victims. At times, these acts of violence were perpetrated on their own people. In fact, current reports from some aboriginal communities and families even outside these communities continue this violence, especially regarding the treatment that their women and children receive. Yes. It also occurs in non-aboriginal communities as well, and not just non-indigenous families. However, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children comprise 2.7 per cent of children in Australia, yet constitute 20 per cent of those placed in out-of-home care. What's more, as these departmental child protection figures are based on reported child abuse and neglect only, they are likely to be an under-estimate of actual levels of child maltreatment. Thus, it would appear that the documented extent of assault in Indigenous communities is just the tip of the iceberg. This seriously needs to be addressed by the Aboriginal community.
Many who have come to this country as immigrants over the last 200 years have come here to make a better life. Let's get working together to encourage this. Many here have had to put the past injustices aside and make an effort to improve their position. Lets not make historical tragedies an excuse for laziness.
