Just had a look at Australian of the Year stats. The award has been dominated by Sport, The Arts (ie , TV, movie stars and singers) with Medical Science coming in a distant third.
In recent years there has been a strong emphasis on indigenous and migrant achievers.
Adam Goodes seems like a really good up-front guy. But Australian of the Year? As a travelling pro sportsman he would spend 90% of his time consumed by that activity.
Taking into account Young Aust of the Year as well we have recently had Lleyton Hewitt, Steve Waugh, Pat Rafter, Ian Thorpe, Jacqueline Freney,Jessica Watson, Casey Stoner. And Adam Gilchrist is the chair of the panel.
