'The Doctor' just about always means a medical doctor/practitioner. There should be no room for confusion. Some vets and dentists call themselves Dr. That's a wank too imo.

Have a mate who is a Doc now. As an intern he used to tell people at parties he was a plumber. Saved a lot of boring questions about health problems and left him free to chat chicks. He ended up marrying a girl who asked him if he would come round and look at her taps.
