One of my pet hates is people with a PhD announcing themselves as Dr.……, without actually stating what the doctorate is for. It could be anything - middle age leprosy, river currents in the Himalayas etc. It's a wank regardless imo. Instead, just either leave out 'Dr' or put PhD after the name if they want to advertise their credentials.
Some PhD people use Dr. in a misleading way eg a PhD in naturopathy is quite often used in health care advertising by the naturopath as Dr. Smith, say. That should not be allowed.
'The Doctor' just about always means a medical doctor/practitioner. There should be no room for confusion. Some vets and dentists call themselves Dr. That's a wank too imo.
