Agreed. I've been reading arguments for several decades (always by non-disinterested writers) that shorting equities helps to balance the real sharemarkets, etc. But I remain quite sure that overall the ability to sell shares that are not truly owned is a pernicious and immoral practice that inevitably penalises smaller private shareholders, and should therefore be banned.
