    Consumer spending as % of GDP is the most important figure of the health of the economy. IN this we are comparable to UK, EU and many other first world countries. As you can see consumption was a bigger % of GDP in the post-GFC period - this was what saved us from recession, courtesy of Lab Govt. https://tradingeconomics.com/australia/consumer-spending

    No amount of spin can alter the facts @MirCat...Note the slight fall in 2005, the next slight dip in GFC (saved from recession by mining and consumption). Now we have a much sharper drop, understandably. And it will likely continue to drop until the borders are re-opened and immigration/tourism re-commences.
