Global lithium production declines 5% in 2020 - report

(***** News) - According to the preliminary data released by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), estimated global mine production of lithium in 2020 was 82,000 tonnes of lithium content (excl. USA), a 5% decline over 2019 (86,000 tonnes).
USGS said that five mineral operations in Australia, two brine operations each in Argentina and Chile, and two brine and one mineral operation in China accounted for the majority of the world’s lithium production. Several established lithium operations postponed capacity expansion plans. Junior mining operations in Australia and Canada ceased production altogether.

With 40,000 tonnes of mined lithium content Australia was the largest lithium producer in 2020; local lithium output nosedived by 11% y-o-y. Chile (18,000 tonnes) was the second largest lithium producer followed by China (14,000 tonnes) and Argentina (6,200 tonnes).
