Posco opens new battery materials research center to enhance its prowess

South Korea`s top steel maker Posco has established a research center dedicated to developing battery materials with group-wide support, upping its commitment to boosting competitiveness by seeking new growth opportunities beyond steel business.

On Tuesday, Posco, Posco Chemical, and the Research Institute of Industrial Science & Technology (RIST) held an inauguration ceremony of the center in the southeastern industrial port of Pohang, kicking off research activities to develop next-generation anode and cathode materials, core parts of a lithium ion battery.

Posco said the center installed with facilities to study and pilot anode and cathode products and test battery technologies will be able to provide tailored products to customers and to reduce delivery time to the market.

The center initially manned by 84 researchers from Posco Chemical and RIST will hire more people later to strengthen R&D capabilities.

The steel giant aims to integrate resources for secondary battery research from Posco and its affiliates to better meet increasing demand from customers at home and abroad based on its market leadership in energy technology.

In particular, Posco will focus on developing high-capacity NCM anode, high-output natural graphite cathode and artificial anode materials.

Posco has fostered its energy business as a new growth driver by combining anode and cathode material business under Posco Chemical, developing energy materials for next-generation electric vehicles and commercializing artificial graphite materials with an aim to add 17 trillion won ($14.7 billion) in annual sales and elevate its share to 20 percent in the global energy material market by 2030.
