Hi Andy, just a clarification: LFP batteries have a lot of properties that the NCM chemistry is not able to match yet; the most important is safety. Thermal runaway is crítical for some applications, as public transport, and LFP batteries are much more stable than the NCM with a lower fire and explosion risk.
This is directly impacting on the battery application, i.e. in China 100% bus batteries are LFP because in case of a problem you need time to evacuate the bus passengers, an NCM battery would not give you enough time to do so.
NCM are allowed in private cars due to it’s assumed that the car can be evacuated quickly, in case the battery enters in thermal runaway.
So LFP batteries use is based on other important requirements, and not only due to SQM is dumping low quality Li carbonate. In case of bus transport, which is a massive sector, NCM is not good enough... Each application needs a different battery chemistry, there is not a winner chemistry that fits all purposes.
