Cool. Personally I think the gains in battery tech and fast charging over the past couple of years make plugin EV’s a formidable and much simpler tech. But ... the Toyota dudes are far better informed than any industry commentator (and of course me) and their persistence with such a difficult new tech as fuel cell ev is imo to be admired. So they may find their massive investments in the fuel cell component wasted ... but imo definitely not being lazy. And, the battery, motor, regen braking, power management etc etc technologies are of course common to both techs.
No connection to Toyota - but I do admire them as a manufacturer.
BTW you may want to check your comment “Nissan Leaf outsells them in modern era.” as Nissan Leaf sales in the USA in 1Q 2020 (3 months) were less than 2,000 https://insideevs.com/news/407403/us-q1-2020-nissan-sold-2000-leafs/ Yet ... Toyota sold 8,000 hybrids in Australia in just two months in 2020!! !!https://www.caradvice.com.au/833763/toyotas-hybrid-cars-breaking-australian-sales-records/.And Toyota Hybrid sales in USA are approximately 30 times Nissan EV US sales.
