Victoria to build one of the world's biggest batteries near Geelong

Victoria will build one of the world's biggest lithium-ion batteries in a state government push to transition to renewable energy and create jobs as the economy recovers from COVID-19.
In a combined daily coronavirus briefing and pre-budget funding announcement, Energy Minister Lily D'Ambrosio said construction of the 300-megawatt battery would create 85 jobs. It will be installed near the Moorabool Terminal Station, just outside Geelong.

"The big battery will help protect our network in summer, create jobs and drive down energy prices, as well as supporting our recovery from the coronavirus pandemic," she said.
"Victoria is embracing new technologies that will unlock more renewable energy projects than ever before."

Victoria to turn to Tesla battery power in time for next summer
The project, named the Victorian Big Battery, is expected to be completed in time for summer 2021-22 to help avoid unscheduled power outages.
The Australian Energy Market Operator has signed a contract with renewable energy company Neoen to deliver the new Tesla battery.
The announcement came as Victoria recorded its sixth straight day of zero coronavirus cases and zero deaths. The rolling 14-day average for new cases was 1.4 in metropolitan Melbourne and zero in the regions.
