Australia’s controversial critical infrastructure bill passed parliament this week, which will make 11 “critical” sectors subject to mandatory reporting requirements and potential government takeover or data gathering, should a serious cybersecurity incident occur.The new laws, which had bipartisan support but were criticised by the Greens and some in the tech industry, will allow the Australian Signals Directorate to intervene as a last resort to “provide emergency assistance” to organisations.The expanded list of sectors deemed critical includes communications, data storage, financial services, water and sewerage, energy, healthcare, higher education and research, food and grocery, transport, space technology, and defence.
