That lithium-sulfer battery chemistry is being studied by Monash University and the CSIRO, reportedly sugar helps to stabilise the sulfer and theoretically increased the lifespan. It'll be 5 years or so before it goes through the right steps to make it a real battery for testing.

There is a race to get better batteries out in the wild, it's all nice and folks love to publish articles about them, the reality is the requirement for rigerous testing and funding to get it into a viable state for manufacturing takes a very long time. Additionally some of these articles have been used to pump up investment in untested technology, or used as some childish way to downplay lithiums strength.

We need better battery and energy storage no doubt, but the world will know about it when its mass produced in the next car. We're still years out from solid state being the new norm and Toyota hold an ass load of patents on that tech and the last time I checked it was 2027/2028 before we see those vehicles.

Lithium's not going away anytime soon.
