Yeah, LFP cells have recently made a bit of a comeback, and are competing with low nickel NCM cells 522 and below. Though, LFP and low nickel NCM cells can take carbonate or hydroxide, whereas high nickel NCM622 and above can only take hydroxide.
VW power day announced their mass market models would see manganese rich cells, which require ~20% more lithium and 38% less nickel. Also called Lithium / Manganese rich cells, and once again, can take carbonate or hydroxide.
What was Ganfeng, Yahua and Yibin thinking when they decided to increase hydroxide capacity, some 140kt combined over the past year. I guess it's fortunate that there product will be consumed either way. I bit like spod and brine, both can be converted to battery grade hydroxide or carbonate, win, win.
Pricing for PLS offtakes are linked to both carbonate and hydroxide prices, so all good.
