I'm not really understanding the whole "ASX rebalance at month end" concept.

Would the fund managers not want all their holdings to go up at the end of the month to make them look good for monthly reporting and unit values??.

Why would they smash the entire mining sector down about 6 or 7% just because it's month end?. Do they want to report sh!t results for the month??. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Nor does the Fed meeting seem to be a likely reason as their meeting isn't until Wednesday so a whole day of trading in the US to go before the Fed announces their decision on rates.

Very strange couple of hours of trading. A coordinated attack from hedge funds on the whole industry could be a possible reason and seems plausible.
