Definitely a Spanish speaking background, but not the Americas. From recollection, came about in early 2000s when talking to a young work colleague who wanted to travel the world and was asking about my travels. He was particularly interested in travelling to Mexico and Sth America, and I said oh well you might be referred to as a gringo somewhere along the way. He took it a step further and referenced the Konyo part, to which I said I'd never heard the combined term but I like it, hence I've used it ever since.
