They see Liontown’s Kathleen Valley project as one day being comparable with Pilbara Minerals’ Pilgangoora lithium mine in WA’s north-west. Liontown expects Kathleen Valley to produce about $2.5 billion a year in free cash flow in its first year of production, scheduled for 2025, even based on current softer spodumene prices.

“Liontown’s board and allies are capable of pushing back on Albemarle’s proposals,” said Stuart Howe, an analyst at Bell Potter.

He noted collectively that Liontown’s board and management control around 19 per cent of the register, and a scheme of arrangement requires it to agree to an acceptable scheme implementation deed with Albermarle, along with 75 per cent of Liontown shareholders.
