The cancellation of shares bought back is one option and one only. Another option, and if there was to be a buy-back, my favoured option, is for the shares to be made treasury shares. These shares are held and have to voting rights or are entitled to dividends. These shares continue to exist but are somewhat 'detuned" ready to be bought back into play when required.
