Sodium as the cathode material has a cost advantage, however other components/materials are more expensive, those components and materials that allow it get close to LFP performance metrics, undermining the "sodium ion battery" cost advantage narrative.
Solid state is the answer, much higher energy density, thus smaller packs for the same performance over current NMC batteries, noting SS has a lithium based anode, replacing graphite, wh/kg crazy good, but they ain't here yet, though research is advanced and a few pilot projects coming to market soon.
Sodium will supplement lithium ion in ESS applications, and will replace lead acid going forward. BMI are tracking sodium ion, and project sodium will grow market share to ~3 to 5% of overall battery supply by 2030
