I guess there is not much you can do in an accident regarding a potential battery fire. I saw a youtube article about the latest Teslas and apparently the air conditioning system is fitted with an eight way valve, and one of the off takes goes to a battery cooling circuit which can run any time of the day, so the aircon system can keep the battery cool whether it is being charged or the battery is in high ambient conditions. Heat is something that deteriorates batteries. To my knowledge Tesla is the only manufacturer to employ this technology at present.
