Price for installing batts to use when the consumer comes home is coming down or rather other energy sources are rising and making the switch a lot more realistic for many. Anyone that owns an EV can now install a 10 KW solar panel system, add 30KW of battery storage, 2 X 5Kw inverters and that would pretty much cover all energy needs for an average home. The car would likely be charged over the weekend unless it sits at home during the day during the week. 30Kw of batts would give the car around 15kW of charge each week day and 15Kw of power for the home from evening to dawn. Doable for around $35 to $50k. Payoff in 5 years or less compared to the cost of petrol engine refilling at $2 per litre at 100 Litres per week. Giving around 800km of distance. The EV requires 140Kw of energy to do this same distance. Which from the supply authority is 30c per Kwh (ie 1 Kw for 1 hr will cost you 30cents) ish. = $41 - still a large saving. Removing any household energy costs from battery storage doesnt compare to fuel costs/savings for vehicles but is becoming more substantial.
It really depends on where the EV is parked and whether large amounts of energy can be stored in the EV during the day - 10 am till 2pm ideally. At some point tho, the EV itself, once fully charged, is itself a great storage battery and could power a normal home for 3 days. Panels are providing more watts per sq m which helps with available roof space. Li space is still in its infancy. Im waiting on the santa claus rally to lift all boats from China to the US. Another couple of weeks of jitters on the macro horizon. Any further signs of inflation will push even more money into energy storage and conversion.
