It serves no useful purpose. It is nothing more then market manipulation. It is gambling but with the use of inside information that the market is more often then not unaware of. In the racing industry if those who have inside information or a direct interest in a horse or dog are discovered to be laying it (i.e. shorting on a platform such as Betfair or by other means) are discovered to be laying the racer they are banned. The gambling industry is better regulated then the stock market in Australia,
