It's not about how much houses cost 'back then'- it still took the average home buyer close to 30% of their income (much like now) to service the loans 'back then', at interest rates around 18%. Sure, house prices were lower, but so were wages for average workers. And we're talking very basic 3 bed/1 bath, 1 living/dining, that today's buyers would eschew- no McMansion's back then for average folk!
