THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT
Nobody much care about old Neville, least of all his grasping relatives when he died alone in the year of 2027. Nobody, least of all his relatives, had ever noticed the Rolex watch on his wrist or the chauffeur that would pick him up in a new electric Mercedes to run errands and visits his few remaining friends. Indeed, to any that remarked on the latter Neville explained that the car belonged to his well-heeled friend of whom was happy to drive him around, given he apparently could not afford a car.
Yes, nobody but a few had cared about old Neville - until one fine day when they received a letter from his solicitors informing them that he had died and they were conditional beneficiaries to his
substantial Will; a Will that required their attendance at a '
Reading of the Will' to satisfy the condition of the bequest (failure to show up for the
Reading and the bequest was null and void).
As instructed by Neville, his solicitor had neglected to inform the beneficiaries that they were entitled to a copy of the Will on demand under the Estate Act; it not being his solicitor's responsibility to inform them of the law in this case, given he was acting on behalf of the deceased. Neville, it would seem, judged his relatives, at least, to be too greedy to risk a legal challenge if they knew or discovered the estate law, and would attend regardless in the knowledge of a totally unexpected
substantial Will and a healthy bequest.
The day arrived for the
Reading and all the named beneficiaries were ensconced in the plush Colins Street offices of Pew Windsor & Associates, reputedly the best and most expensive firm in Oz. Neville had even planned the opulent setting for effect.
Following the legal preamble, the solicitor went on to read the bequests of Neville's Will; in Neville's own words.
"It was a lucky day when I bought 300,000 shares of Pilbara Minerals for 14 cents back in the year of 2020and made my fortune." The solicitor paused and looked up at the eager beneficiaries to inform them that Neville's PLS stock had been liquidated on behalf of Neville's estate, and along with his other liquidated assets the estate cash total available for dispersal was exactly $10.7 Million - net.
The
Reading continued. In the end, to his friends Neville had left a sum equal to the purchase price of a new, high-end EV Mercedes, including his chauffeur. To his grasping, neglectful relatives he left $1 each. The balance going to 'Doctors Without Borders
