From a natural resource management point of view much of the wildlife and their habitat has evolved around salty water in that area. The world is not all about humans and their agricultural activities. When one adds to the destruction of a natural environment there are always long term consequences, which effects everything - fauna, flora and humans. Nothing in isolation.
