O - You would be surprised at the biodiversity that exists in semi arid regions, Pjotr. The problem with the Atacama and other like areas is that they are extremely fragile and excessive water use can effect habitats miles away from the impact zone. In the case of the Atacama I cite the effect on the flamingo population as but one example. Albemarle have made no secret of the fact that they are paying off the peasant villagers to be silent about the changes to the environment.
On the other hand PLS has a low environmental impact and uses very little water, so hardrock lithium is the clear environmental winner and brine a looming environmental catastrophe IMO.
