The thing about cars is that a lot of the value is in the mind (and perhaps the genitals) of the car owner. You are buying an idea, an expression of your personality, membership of a tribe. That's what you get when you buy a huge SUV, and it's also what you get when you buy a Tesla. Wasting money is actually part of the appeal. I imagine that a lot of owners of those crappy Teslas feel special that they are so ahead of the curve, they bought a car before the technology was even mature. They actually LIKE the crappiness. When they get their next car they'll still have that throbbing desire and also the cars will be that little bit better.

But none of that applies to hire companies, they will be back when the cars are less crappy.
