Examine the yellow areas in these two charts - the share price and shorted % since 20 sept 2023.
Notice that from 20 sept, the shorts increased from 11.5% to 21.2% - nearly 10% or 300m shares.
Notice also that nearly all these shorts opened their position at less than the current SP - $4.14.
That means they are all out of the money!
