I am bemused by this post. I don't even know what "the left" is, so I don't know how you could say it ALWAYS calls renewables "free". In a way the idea of domestic energy self-sufficiency is right-wing. The grid is a public utility, it's very socialist. Solar lets you opt out of that, what a right-wing free market choice that is. Renewables are very right wing. Sort of.

My energy setup in my new house was under $20,000, including a fancy heat pump hot water system, but no battery. I didn't care too much about ROI, I did it because I like it. Energy aesthetics. I have an induction cooktop. For my last electricity account I was paid $150. After four quarters of bills I hope to have zero energy costs, but it might end up being $300 a year, we'll see how winter goes.
