One technology that doesn't get a look-in is fusion. Yes, it will be several decades before it 'comes of age', it's very much an experimental technology with significant technical issues to overcome BUT once that happens, it will be a source of clean power capable of replacing today's coal, gas, fission etc. Timeframe? Optimistic estimates are around 2050 to 2060 before it becomes 'viable'.... until then, there is lithium, hydrogen (which IS useful for large scale/industrial applications), and improved carbon capture technologies. Fission is not the saviour people seem to think- "cheap" power but it comes at a very high cost, and incalculable damage to the environment and living creatures if it goes wrong (not to mention the very very long term storage requirements of the radioactive waste generated).
